GLOSSARY OF JAGUAR (and related automotive) TERMS and ABBREVIATIONS

Below is a glossary of Jaguar (and related automotive) terms and abbreviations.

  • ABS – Anti-lock Braking System.
  • A/C – Air Conditioning
  • ACC – Adaptive Cruise Control takes 40 horizontal measurements with every scan each 100 milliseconds, and incorporates FORWARD ALERT which alerts you if you’ve moved closer than your pre-set gap, so you can take the action you decide is appropriate.
  • Ambla  – manufacturers name – pvc type fabric often used on seat backs, glove box top and door cardsAniline  – top quality hide reserved for Daimlers, Insignias and other special editions – dyed, not painted or coated, retains the original character of the hide – scars, pores and imperfections etc.
  • ARTS – Adaptive Restraint Technology System unique to Jaguar (when first developed – 2004?) it uses a comprehensive system of sensors to determine crash severity and initiate the appropriate level of airbag and seatbelt pre-tensioner protection in milliseconds. It includes ultrasonic and seat sensors to detect the presence, position and size of the front seat passenger for optimum airbag deployment.
  • ASL – Automatic Speed Limiter incorporates CRUISE CONTROL and prevents you from exceeding your pre-set speed, such as the legal limit, unless you use kickdown or switch off the system.
  • BHP – Brake Horse Power.
  • BW – Borg Warner (automatic transmission).
  • CATS – Computer Active Technology Suspension monitors road conditions and your driving style, automatically adjusting damper settings to enhance high-speed stability, ride quality and cornering. It works in conjunction with DSC.
  • CBC – Cornering Brake Control.
  • CGI – Compacted Graphite Iron.
  • CoB – Clear over Base paint system introduced with the XJ40, where a clear protective coat of lacquer is applied to the base colour.
  • CWW (CW or WW) – Chrome Wire Wheels.
  • DAB – Digital Audio Broadcasting.
  • DHC – Drop Head Coupe
  • DIVCT – Dual Independent Variable Cam Timing.
  • DPF – Diesel Particulate Filter
  • DSC – Dynamic Stability Control helps prevent understeer or oversteer by, if necessary, individually braking each wheel.  It also controls traction on varying road surfaces, for example where one rear wheel is on ice and the other on tarmac. It works in conjunction with CATS.
  • ECM – Engine Control Module (aka ECU, CPU).
  • FHC – Fixed Head Coupe
  • FJSH – Full Jaguar (Main Dealer) Service History.
  • FSH – Full Service History.
  • GPS – Global Positioning System.
  • Happich  – manufacturers name – PVC type fabric used for hoods.
  • IFS – Independent Front Suspension.
  • Inmont – Manufacturers of paints and resins, taken over by BASF.
  • IRS – Independent Rear Suspension.
  • JaguarVoice – controls the DVD based navigation system, climate control, audio and telephone by spoken command.
  • JTIS – Jaguar Technical Information System.
  • Lacro – Protective paint sealant made by Jewelultra, prior to Diamondbrite.
  • LCD – Liquid Crystal Display.
  • LED – Light Emitting Diode.
  • LWB – Long Wheel Base.
  • MOD – Manual with Overdrive.
  • MY – Model Year
  • NA – Naturally Aspirated (an engine that draws in air without the aid of a Supercharger).
  • Nm – Newton Metre is a measurement of torque (1Nm = 0.737 lb ft).
  • OEM – Original Equipment Manufacturer.
  • OEW – Old English White.
  • OHV – Overhead Valve (or Valve-in-head) refers to an engine where the inlet and exhaust valves are placed in the cylinder head, rather than the engine block.
  • OTS – Open Two Seater.
  • PAS – Power Assisted Steering.
  • PS – Pferdestärke is the German translation for horsepower and refers to a Teutonic measurement very similar to BHP now often seen in Jaguar literature.
  • RPM – Revs Per Minute.
  • Sat Nav – Satellite Navigation.
  • S/C – Supercharged (forced induction).
  • Seat cushion – seat base.
  • Seat squab – backrest.
  • SGDI – Spray-guided Direct Injection.
  • SRS – Supplementary (or Secondary) Restraint System refers to airbags, and their position within a car will be marked with these initials.
  • SV – Side Valve (valve in block) refers to an engine where the inlet and exhaust valves are placed in the engine block.
  • SWB – Standard (or Short) Wheel Base.
  • Torque – a twisting force which can be measured in Newton metres.
  • TPA – Thermoplastic Acrylic (paint) used circa XJ Series 3 era.
  • VIN – Vehicle Identification Number (aka Chassis Number).
  • VVT – Variable Valve Timing (aka VCT – Variable Camshaft Timing).
